Gujarat Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA)

The Central Government, with a view to conserve and protect the unique environment of coastal stretches and marine areas, besides livelihood security to the fisher communities and other local communities in the coastal areas and to promote sustainable development based on scientific principles taking into account the dangers of natural hazards, sea level rise due to global warming, have declared the coastal stretches of the country and the water area up to its territorial water limit, excluding the islands of Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep and the marine areas surrounding these islands, as Coastal Regulation Zone by publishing CRZ notification 2019 in supersession of CRZ notification, 2011.

For the purpose of implementation and enforcement of the provisions this notification and compliance with conditions stipulated there under, the Central Government, New Delhi has constituted the Gujarat Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA). The GCZMA constituted on 20th December, 2022 is in force.

Sea level rise due to global warming, does hereby, declare the coastal stretches of the country and the water area up to its territorial water limit, exclusing the island of Andaman and Nicobar.

Functions

  • The Authority shall deal with environmental issues relating to Coastal Regulation Zone which may be referred to it by the State Government of Gujarat, the National Coastal Zone Management Authority or the Central Government, as the case may be.
  • The Authority shall identify ecologically sensitive areas in the Coastal Regulation Zone and formulate area-specific management plans for such identified areas.
  • Authority shall co-ordinate for implementing conservation projects or projects related to upliftment ofcoastal population protection, etc.
  • The Authority shall identity coastal areas highly vulnerable to erosion or degradation and formulate area-specific management plans for such identitied areas and arrange for funding for the implementation of the same.
