Gujarat Biodiversity Board (GBB)

Government of Gujarat has established Gujarat Biodiversity Board (GBB) in the year 2006 vide its notification no. GVN/2006/8/WLP/2003/177/G1; dated: 11/05/2006 under section 22 of the Act. The Board is actively engaged in the formation of Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs) at the level of the local bodies of the State. The board is headed by a Chairman, who is an eminent person having knowledge and experience in sustainable management of Biodiversity. Presently Shri. S. K. Chaturvedi, IFS, PCCF & Chairman in the rank of Principal Chief Conservator of Forests is working as the Chairman of the Board & Shri P. G. Gardi, IFS, working as member Secretary of the Board.

Gujarat Biodiversity Board is presently concentrating on the following activities

  • Constitution of Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs) : As per section 41 of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002,the constitution of BMC in each and every local body is mandatory .The Board has started the constitution of BMCs at Gram Panchayat level & so far 329 BMCs have been constituted BMCs in 12 districts.
  • Preparation of People’s Biodiversity Registers (PBRs) : As per section 41 of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, after constitution of BMCs, the documentation of total Biodiversity & its related traditional Knowledge to be documented by the BMC in the form of People’s Biodiversity Register in their area of jurisdiction. The Board has initiated this working in more than 50 village Panchayats in different districts.
